The Release Train Engineer’s (RTE) primary purpose is to support Agile Release Trains (ART) by steering them to success and navigating the complexity of delivering software consistently in large environments. The RTE’s focus is to deliver value by managing program level processes, execution, and continuous improvement, as well as Release Train Feature Roadmaps and planning. The RTE will be responsible for optimizing the flow of epics/features and the value delivered by a smaller Agile Release Train (ART). Coordinates and facilitates the ART ceremonies, manages dependencies across teams in the ART, and provides visibility into the health of epic/feature delivery and the overall program increment. Ensures impediments to epic/feature delivery are resolved quickly and protects the teams from outside disruptions to delivery. Manages financials for the ART and assist with resource planning. Helps define norms/agreements for the ART and enforces the agreements. Coordinates and facilitates ART ceremonies - e.g. Backlog Refinement, Program Increment (PI) Planning, ART Sync (or PO Sync, Scrum of Scrums), System Demos, Retrospective. In collaboration with the PM, ensures the program has a healthy product/program backlog. Facilitates dependency management/risk management/impediment removal for the ART. Promotes/facilitates communication and collaboration within the ART to support value delivery and PI commitments. Responsible for providing status updates and reporting pertaining to ART plans/delivery/timelines/impediments to stakeholders and leadership. Ensures Enterprise Change Management and other policy requirements for technology solutions are met for the epics/features delivered by the ART. Measures ART delivery, maturity, and performance and reviews the metrics with the ART to identify improvement opportunities. Captures data to help determine/track product funding and resource acquisition needs.

Release Train Transparency
• Assists the ART to remain transparent to itself, the teams on the train, and to the organization through:
• Backlog Management and ALM tool data integrity for accurate reporting. May include the collection of metrics, KPIs, investment mix reporting, and other reporting as needed by the release train or organization.
• Facilitation and continuous improvement of periodic ART Reviews with organizational leaders and stakeholders to provide clarity on the expected value delivery and to gain stakeholder feedback on changes to direction the release train may need to take.
• May include participation in and assisting in the improvement of the System Demo

Delivery Coordination
• Drives the ART in the coordination of major feature releases and ongoing delivery of value to customers where multiple teams, release trains, or solution groups are involved in development and release by hosting RTC (Release Train Coordination) meetings as needed.
• Drives the ART and the Product Readiness Managers in the coordination of program level initiatives that cross multiple release trains.
• Drives the ART in resolving or reporting escalated issues involving risk, or dependency management that may be hindering the team’s ability to deliver features. Scrum masters and teams facilitate the resolution of impediments, dependencies and risks within their span of influence.

Continuous Improvement
• Drives the ART to continuously improve through the facilitation of Art Retrospectives quarterly, or more often as needed, to improve backlog management, release train reviews, sprint reviews, or release train coordination and higher-level function.
• Contribute to the RTE Community of Practice by helping the organization maintain alignment, learn new techniques, and improve technical and quality practices.

Required Skills:

• 7+ years’ experience working in an agile environment
• Experience in coaching and training at all levels within the agile framework.
• Experience with the RTE Role
• Extensive knowledge of Lean Agile SDLC processes.
• Knowledge of Enterprise Testing and Work Mgmt. tools.
• Scaled Agile coach certified - SAFe SPC preferred
• Scrum Master certified or equivalent experience.
• Experience in coaching and facilitation of core agile practices: Kanban, Value stream mapping,  backlog refinement,  Release planning (Program Increment), Iteration/Sprint planning, Metrics (at all levels)

Desired Skills:

• Prior Experience as an RTE within a very large enterprise
• Prior experience operating as an RTE within a highly regulated space. such as Financial Technology

• Certified SAFe® Release Train Engineer (RTE)

• Certified SAFe® Advanced Scrum Master (SASM)

• Certified SAFe® Program Consultant (SPC)
