Business Selection & Conflicts Group (London)

The Business Selection & Conflicts Group (BSC) is the first point of contact within Investment Banking on potential new business opportunities as well as queries regarding ongoing transactions. BSC clears all new potential business mandates to confirm potential conflicts of interest are anticipated, identified, and managed.  BSC also drives decision making on business selection issues to ensure the firm is committing to the most attractive opportunities. 

BSC is a global group based in New York, London and Hong Kong that interacts daily with investment bankers as well as with various functions within Investment Banking (legal, compliance, finance, business operations). Since all new investment banking mandates must be analyzed by BSC before they are accepted by the firm, the group works in a very demanding, time sensitive environment.

Responsibilities

The position is designed to provide a broad range of responsibilities and exposure, with tasks ranging from monitoring and reporting news on M&A deals to assisting senior members of the group with analyzing sensitive and high-profile transactions. While the person in this position will experience all aspects of the business selections and conflicts clearance process, the role’s principal responsibilities include:

  • conducting initial conflicts checks and collecting relevant details for new potential business opportunities;

  • monitoring business mandates and identifying issues that arise following initial conflicts clearance;

  • managing the deal teams’ inquiries and expectations regarding conflicts clearance outcomes and timing; and

  • documenting and tracking all conflicts checks, status updates, key information, and deal documentation in BSC’s database

What we are looking for

Candidates should have strong analytical skills, an interest in financial markets, enthusiasm about learning the business and ability to work effectively with a team. In particular, the ideal candidate has 1-2 years transaction-oriented experience in a business, legal or compliance-oriented role and exhibits the following:

  • excellent written and verbal communication skills;

  • strong attention to detail and organization skills;

  • an ability to learn quickly, work in a time sensitive environment and think creatively to solve problems and anticipate potential questions or issues;

  • effective time management and prioritization skills;

  • an understanding of how to handle and manage confidential information;

  • an ability to quickly and efficiently navigate information systems;

  • proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite – PowerPoint, Excel, Word and Outlook; and

  • an undergraduate degree in Finance, Accounting, Business, Economics or other relevant field is a plus.
