Vice President - FICC, Municipal Credit Underwriter

Municipal Credit Underwriter

The Public Sector Banking Group, part of the firm’s Municipal Banking and Markets Group, provides on balance sheet capital raising solutions (loans, letters of credit, and other credit products) to State and Municipal clients (cities, counties, school districts, public universities, transportation authorities, etc).

The Municipal Credit Underwriter (“MCU”) is an integral member of the client coverage team and assists with the administration of the credit portfolio and the delivery of the end-to-end credit experience to our clients. 

The MCU is primarily responsible for the independent underwriting and structuring of transactions.  Prepares and presents credit packages for prospective opportunities, including quantitative and qualitative analysis of a client’s credit quality, economic/sector analysis, repayment ability and key credit risk assessment.  Collaborates with Municipal Credit Officers, Risk Management, Investment Bankers, and Client Managers, as well as directly with clients.  Works with external bank counsel to document transactions.  Responsible for adherence to credit policies, guidelines, and applicable regulatory requirements. Provides ongoing management and has primary accountability for all monitoring and administration tasks for assigned portfolio.  Serves as a coach and mentor to junior Municipal Credit employees

Qualifications

Required Skills:

  • Undergraduate degree in finance, economics, accounting, or public administration
  • Five to seven years experience in commercial or municipal credit analysis, structuring, financial markets, public finance or government administration
  • Clear and concise verbal and written communication skills; ability to present work product to others in a persuasive manner
  • Sound judgment, logical reasoning, and a strong drive for results and success
  • Ability to work independently and manage changing workload priorities
  • Operate effectively in a virtual team environment across geographic boundaries
  • Efficient organizational skills/attention to detail
  • PC/computer proficiency -- Microsoft Word/Excel

Desired Skills:

  • Experience in municipal finance
  • Familiar with loan and bond documentation
  • 10 years municipal/commercial banking experience
  • Demonstrated leadership
  • Ability to negotiate in an environment with diverse viewpoints 
  • Experience making decisions with less than perfect or complete information
  • Experience with building and working with complex Excel models
