Equity Research Associate/Vice President- Specialty Pharma and Biotechnology

New York, New York

Job Description:

Group Description: The Specialty Pharma and SMID Biotechnology group is NYC-based and is looking to add an associate position covering pharmaceuticals and biotech on a top-ranked team. The role spans a very broad set of responsibilities, ranging from biotech to mid-cap pharma. Equity research analysts will follow the progress of public pharma and biotechs and make stock recommendations to institutional clients. Further, the role also entails vetting numerous private stage therapeutic-focused companies for potential IPO’s. Although neither a basic science nor biopharma industry background is required, it is very desirable as it limits ‘steepness’ of learning curve and facilitates communication with companies and clients. Given the team’s heavy vetting load and fast pace nature of the biopharma information cycle, the candidate should also have some experience with financial modeling and quantitative analysis, as well as strong verbal communication and writing skills.

Skills you will develop

  • How to interview physician KOL’s (key opinion leaders) and company executives

  • Understanding of the intricacies of patent law and FDA regulations that determine a drug’s length of market exclusivity

  • Analysis of clinical and scientific data, and an ability to succinctly communicate how data will drive future market share and stock value

  • Seek out new, value-added and/or unusual (differentiated) sources of information

  • Public speaking and building professional relationships (internal sales/trading and external clients)

Specific qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree (Advanced degree in a scientific discipline or industry expertise is a plus but not required)

  • Academic background in a science field is preferable (e.g., molecular biology, genomics, cell biology, immunology, biochemistry)

  • Ideal candidate would have min 3-4 years of experience (preferably in healthcare) in equity research, buy side experience, investment banking or biopharma consulting experience

  • Must have strong writing and financial modeling skills

  • Must enjoy following the stock market and doing desktop and field research

  • Must have excellent communications skills, written and verbal

  • Must have very strong attention to detail, ability to multi-task

  • Must work well in a collaborative team environment

  • Must have strong desire to be team player and view team’s success as a reflection of individual success
