Virtualization Lab Engineer (VMWare)

Job Description:

Virtualization Lab Engineers (VMWare) are responsible for evaluating emerging/emerged security technology across a broad portfolio of domains including hardware, software, network and virtualization technologies.

The successful candidate will be highly intelligent, insanely curious and have an unbridled thirst for figuring out new technologies in the security space in addition to possessing a broad technology background to serve as a foundation for understanding emerging/innovative approaches to hard problems. The ability to work across a wide variety of technology disciplines to determine the viability of vendor solutions is required, as is the ability to flourish in a fast paced environment and communicate clearly in both oral and written modalities. The candidate will be expected to independently execute ideas/evaluations from concept through completion as well as manage small ad-hoc teams (contractors/vendor consultants) within our group and manage lab datacenter equipment.

We are looking for someone who is enthusiastic and committed to this work: in other words, you do this because you love it, and hard problems don’t scare you.

Required Skills:

  • 5-7 years of experience in infrastructure management. And 2-3 years working with virtualization technologies including distributed virtual firewalls and switches.
  • Exceptional understanding of enterprise grade server hardware including component level installation and troubleshooting as well specification and design of complex systems.
  • Deep understanding of networking routing and switching as well as CLI configuration and working with enterprise grade networking hardware. 

Desired Skills:

  • 3+ years within information security, especially related to virtualization technologies.
  • Capable of provisioning next-generation IDS/IPS firewalls and/or craft effective firewall policy with in-depth knowledge of well-known ports and protocols.  Understanding of well-known vulnerabilities to common ports and protocols.
  • Exceptional analytical/critical thinking abilities - must be able to analyze proposed technological solutions to not only understand how mechanisms work, but to also develop methods of effectively testing and evaluating technologies
  • Excellent research skills - must be able to identify relevant data sources for information about emerging technologies to gain an understanding of how things work, and be willing to dig in and take things apart to figure out how they work
  • Strong written communication skills - must be able to write technical whitepapers/reports on emerging technologies
  • Strong oral communication skills - must be able to present findings to broad audiences inclusive of senior technology and business management, requiring the ability to explain complex technical matters in a way both technical and non-technical personnel can understand
  • Ability to work independently: Must be adept at undertaking and completing tasks independently, meeting schedules and delivery timelines, and to moving swiftly from concepts and theory to action.
  • Ability to build and execute infrastructure solutions where scant documentation exists.  Especially in situations that require application of existing technologies in new and unique ways
  • Ability to collaborate with teams at all levels: Line of Business, R&D, Operations, Technology Infrastructure, Platform Engineering, Vendor
  • Capable of advancing the program by developing policies, processes and procedures to promote security technology evaluation objectives for adoption throughout the Bank as an on-demand service

Enterprise Role Overview: Participates in design, development and implementation of systems engineering activities, to include OS technical support, systems programming and data center capabilities. Responsible for components of complex engineering and/or analytical tasks and activities. Assists in establishment of input/output processes and working parameters for hardware compatibility and coordination of subsystems design and integration of total system. Serves as a fully seasoned/proficient technical resource; provides tech knowledge and capabilities as team member and individual contributor. Will not have direct reports but will influence and direct activities of a team related to special initiatives or operations. Provides input on staffing, budget and personnel. Typically 5 or more years of systems engineering experience.
