Equity Research Analyst, Specialty Pharma & Biotechnology

New York, New York

Job Description:

The SMID cap biotech and specialty pharma team currently covers 25-listed companies with a focus in the following disease areas: orphan diseases, oncology and immunology. In addition to coverage of publicly traded companies, the team regularly vets a number of private biopharma companies for potential IPOs. The candidate for the position should be intellectually curious and have a deep desire to learn. Although neither a basic science nor biopharma industry background is required, it is very desirable as it shortens the learning curve and facilitates communication with companies and clients. Given the team’s heavy vetting load and fast pace nature of the biopharma information cycle, the candidate should also have some experience with financial modeling and quantitative analysis, as well as strong verbal communication and writing skills.

The ideal candidate possesses experience in biopharma sell-side research or biopharma industry background.  Further, the candidate should possess experience with company modelling and have a passion for following the stock market. The candidate will work alongside Senior Analysts and Associates in all aspects of the research process, from idea generation to modeling, including but not limited to the following:

  • Write industry and company reports and company launch initiations

  • Develop doctor/patient surveys and conduct doctor/expert interviews to understand new product/therapeutic potential, market dynamics, and current and future product demand

  • Build financial models to quantitatively analyze company valuations

  • Demonstrate industry knowledge (such as drug regulatory pathways, drug reimbursement, and process of securing/enforcing drug-related patents)

  • Build relationships and facilitate information flow with contacts at covered companies

  • Seek out new, value-added and/or unusual sources of information

  • Have ability to monitor news flow, analyze clinical data and highlight stock-impacting updates when Senior Analyst is traveling

  • Interact regularly with sales, trading and external clients

  • Bachelor’s Degree. (Advanced degree in a life science discipline or industry expertise is a plus but not required)

  • Academic background in a science field (e.g., molecular biology, genomics, cell biology, immunology, biochemistry)

  • Ideal candidate would have min 3-4 years of experience (preferably in healthcare) in equity research, buy side experience, investment banking or biopharma consulting experience

  • Strong writing and financial modeling skills

  • Must enjoy following the stock market and doing desktop and field research

  • Must have excellent communications skills, written and verbal

  • Must have very strong attention to detail, ability to multi-task

  • Must work well in a collaborative team environment

  • Must have strong desire to be team player and view team’s success as a reflection of individual success
