Job Title: Unix Systems Administrator

Location:  Camberley/Chester

Here in our Camberley or Chester office we are looking to recruit for a Unix Systems Administrator. The Global Technology and Operations Unix team provide high quality, comprehensive infrastructure and operating system support services to business technology partners on a globally consistent basis. These services cover the automated monitoring and resolution of standard infrastructure/application events, along with an in-depth proactive assessment program that ensures the ongoing stability of core applications.

The team leverages a deep understanding of applications, data and business requirements to complement both the enterprise operations and domain design and build teams in providing the highest quality infrastructure support services.

To ensure this support is offered consistently throughout the working day, there will be an expectation for there to be regularly cover one of the following patterns:-

Standard day (9AM to 5PM)

Early shift (7AM to 3PM)

Late shift (10AM to 6PM)

Responsibilities will include but not limited to:

  • 3rd Line UNIX systems consultation, support and administration

  • Incident triage, investigation and restoration

  • Problem root cause analysis and known error recording

  • Co-ordination of Event resolution in conjunction with offshore peer platform teams

  • Facilitate warm hand off of Service Requests to platform teams

  • Disaster failover, recovery and isolation testing

  • Work against pre-determined working practices with fixed scope

  • Enforce policy, standards and procedure

  • Management activity reports

  • Participate in evidence gathering as part of regular audit reviews

  • Vulnerability remediation and configuration drift management

  • Project logistics and delivery

  • Software release and change management

The EMEA Unix Operations support team are a technologically inquisitive group that thrives in a dynamic environment. The team offers a wide gamut of cross platform educational possibilities due to the variety of Unix challenges and technical knowhow on tap, whilst always fostering an approachable demeanour.

Core Skills:

Desired Competencies

  • Excellent troubleshooting skills in conjunction with a proactive mind set.

  • Comfortable with operating in a fast paced and often challenging environment.

  • Familiarity with ITIL frameworks within BMC Remedy ( Incident/Problem/Known Error/Change )

  • Practical experience in administering operating systems with a focus on Unix variants

  • Good appreciation of infrastructure topologies such as DNS/NTP/DHCP/SAN/NAS/AD

  • Exposure to O/S virtualization technologies

  • Awareness of bare metal Clustering technologies in a typical Unix environment

  • Knowledge of shell scripting

Preferred:

  • Knowledge of packet capture and deep analysis using industry tools such as Wireshark

  • Appreciation of Oracle Real Application Clusters ( RAC ) from a Linux OS layer

  • Awareness of alternative time adherence technologies - FSMLabs TimeKeeper

  • Exposure to Veritas Infoscale product suite

  • Familiarity of performance/capacity Management tools such as BMC TrueSight Capacity Optimization

  • Understanding of Low Latency methodologies in a RHEL environment

  • Knowledge of Automation products ( BMC BladeLogic / Arium Orchestrator )

  • Ability to program in any of the following Ansible / Python / Perl

  • Exposure to Oracle SPARC/HP/IBM/Dell hardware platforms
